4th Grade Reading
By Taita

Clip to ScrapBook
When I taught 4th grade I began each reading session with a short directed lesson (5 - 10) minutes. I selected reading skills based upon state standards and observations made during reading groups. My school used a basal
series but I adapted my schedule to use the basal textbook 3 days per week and the other 2 days we studies novels together.

The novels kids this age will enjoy are: Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar, Holes by Louis Sachar, Skinnybones by Barbara Park, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume, and Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief by Wendelin Van Draneen. Since

kids this age will always choose funny books, I chose to introduce more classic books and award winners. They didn't want to read them but really got into them quickly (Stone Fox by John Gardiner... Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis...Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo)

Each quarter I chose to introduce at least one genre of literature. This served as a fccus for the marking period and students selected their own books related to our genre for their monthly book report. If you get adventurous, try Literature Circles 1-2 days per week.

Good luck! You'll do a FANTASTIC job!
