1st day
By Tracy

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi. Yes I agree the 1st day can be more tramatic for the parents...which the child sees and then reacts to. Most parents in my school usually walk their child into my classroom the 1st day. The children get to sit anywhere
they want and start coloring a picture I have at their seat. While they are coloring and talking with mom/dad and new students, I put all their supplies in a corner to go through later (unfortunately we get no help from our staff) I let them say goodbye for the day and ask the parents to leave after about 15 minutes. The teachers line up the 1st week of school outside and the students
line up in front of their teacher. Parents are welcome to wait outside the 1st week, but after the bell rings I ask all parents to leave. It is difficult to ask parents to leave, but I feel the students are prepared and excited to be at school. I tell the parents before hand at an orientation meeting that after the 1st day it would be best for their child if they did not walk them into our class. I also stress to the parents that their actions will be copied by their children. If the parents are excited and happy, then usually the child will be too! Good luck!
