SFA
By T

Clip to ScrapBook
I haven't taught everyday math but I hear positive things so good luck there...

I'm also out of the loop on SFA - it's been 5 years since I did it and they've changed somewhat - but I taught it for 3 years in inner city
and it was great for the students we served. I went to 2 SFA conferences (including Baltimore, met Robert Slavin!!!!) so I have a pretty good vision.

If you don't get training right away, here's a few pointers. One nice thing is you will have your materials and won't have to invent the wheel everyday. SFA is a CULTURE so learn and internalize the nonverbal signals ASAP - your
whole school will use it everywhere. I'll guess that if you're in 2nd you will most likely be teaching "Wings". The first thing you'll want to work on is timimg - it's critical to SFA and you will amaze yourself how much you can do. The lesson structure is based on best teaching practices that you will probably be familiar with but organized in a tight format. Next really work on cooperative structures and how to get the kids involved in team activities. SFA uses a lot of Spencer Kagen cooperative structures so you can check that out online with a search. And last - enjoy! The kids will make a lot of progress and it's fun to watch. Have a good year!
