Hi! I'm starting a new job in Portland for this upcoming school year. When I was job-searching, I heard an awful lot about the state-wide budget problems going on in Oregon and how that has affected education. I have 2 years of experience in a private school setting and sent applications/credentials/etc. to every public school within driving distance from Portland and to a lot of private schools. I did not get a call from a single public school. I ended up taking a job in a private school that I really loved! I noticed that 3 schools I interviewed with had all started around the same time (8-10 years ago), and was told that right around then the state changed their state-wide objectives or philosophy or something, and that a lot of private schools were formed by groups of parents who were unhappy with the changes. When I was there interviewing (in April), one of the area school districts voted to shorten the school year by a week - making it the shortest school year in the country - because of money concerns. However, after I accepted my position, I kept my eye on the district websites, and they DID have a few primary positions open per district, so it's not like they aren't hiring anyone. My advice would be to be persistant and flexible, and I'm sure you will do fine! Portland is a beautiful city!!!
