WOW! People outside of teaching wouldn't believe this!

Hi,

Bless your heart! What a year you are in for. I think some of the advice, esp. the safe place is a good idea. Read the Love and Logic materials that have been suggested on this board, but don't make many compromises
for this situation. He sounds like he is perhaps severely emotionally disordered or he is a master manipulator. I would not push him to be near the things that trigger his problems, but create a normal environment for him to safely step into if he wants. You have to be careful to NOT cater to the neurosis. The advice about no animal books or such is nonsense and shows someone's
advice is not healthy.

BTW- you will have to reach out and get a lot of help from specialists, but you will find that his problems are as puzzling to them as they are to you. Use your gut level feelings about "professional advice". Resist advice that seems like nonsense. I worked with neurotic, schizophrenic kids for a year and some parents are totally controlled by their kid's obsessions. One was so angry at us that we personally used things with fragrances since she claimed her kid went into tantrums because of that (no deodorant, fabric softeners, etc...get the picture). So, once again, listen to that calm inner common sense voice that you have and have confidence in it.

Good luck!
Connie
