I taught 4th grade and my students were 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. The 13 year old was reading on a first grade level. I referred her for testing -- they stated that she was a slow learner and not a candidate for testing. Hello?
Slow? We don't have that many years. You have my sympathy. I was teaching three reading groups, three math groups and when they told me I had to type of social studies and science lesson plans on a second grade level to cover the 4th grade material I just had to leave. I loved these children and I am anking how could a seventh grader drive. Well it ended up that his parents had
lied when they moved and that he was infact 17 1/2 years old. When made it more painful was that he was barely reading. I wish someone had helped hm earlier. I have an uncle who was a special needs student.(I never knew) He graduated high school, unable to read. One day I was taking him to the doctor and my dad told me that I would have to write out the check. I was wondering why and I came to find out all he can do is sign his name. My dad said I wish there were teachers like you then, and that he had one. So remember to stay a caring, naturing force and you never know what may happen.
