Hello Tracey, I have taught sixth grade math for the last 12 years. If math is fun to you, your students will catch your enthusiam. I have use a Scholastic book that has jokes for the calculator where you do the| math them turn the calculator upside down to get the answer. My kids beg to do these. It is a great way to introduce the use of the calculator in a nonthreating way. I have found that students that are weak in math, will display problems with using the calculator as you continue to use harder concepts. I also do math challenges that take the day's concept and kicks it up a notch. | | It is a problem geared to the gifted and stretches the middle to low kids. I play classical music as the students work. I reward students with a piece of candy when they get the answer right. They also earn marks for the behavior parties we have when the class gets the right answer. Students have asked for really hard problems, then we play for double points. I cheer those who get the answer first and after about half the students have gotten the solution, I allow them to help their classmates. We have cheered for those students who finally get the right answer.Hope that these ideas help you as you begin your new assignment. Good luck and greetings from TX, debra w.
