Hi Harper:
I'm a student in a credential program, going into teaching as a second career also.Bear in mind that it can be rough diving right into teaching on an emergency permit with no formal teaching experience while
working on your credential as you go (as your friend suggested). Subbing might be a good idea.

It will quite a bit different for you as the actual teacher than as a sub or volunteer, however. New teachers spend long hours after school and on weekends organizing lessons, etc. I hear that working 10 hour days is not uncommmon when a teacher is a novice. But, many find it rewarding & exciting,

nontheless, so the benefits outweigh the sacrifice. :-)

I would research other options to teaching as well. You could also go back to school and earn your credential in a "fifth year program" (contact your local universities for details), or go to a program wich combines the MS in education and the credential. Credential programs offer student teaching experiences, theory & support. This is extremely helpful if you are brand new to the field. Only you can decide which route will work best for you.Maybe some teaching veterans here can offer some advice?

Here's an ERIC article that outlines some basic info on obtaining a credential:

Congratulations on your decision & good luck! Sounds like teaching could be the perfect career for you.
