Selling Layers By Diana

This is my first time to this site. I just love these message boards. I've already gathered a lot of useful info! Just thought I would respond to your message.I taught 6th grade LA last year for the first time. When | I first starting with the weekly spelling, I found the students only memorized the words & didn't apply them in their daily writing. They didn't even remember the definitions to use correctly! Then another colleague turned me on to the Layered Curriculum by Kathie F. Nunley. The students are given three "layers" to complete a certain number of activities in each layer to work their | | way to a "C", "B", or "A" grade. I tried it during the last few weeks of school last year and the kids really loved it! They did much better on their tests, were beginning to spell the words correctly in their writing, and using the words correctly in sentences! I am going to use the instruction more this year in other subjects as well. It also requires the student to work independently, cooperatively, and to manage their time with respect to work deadlines. There isn't enough space here to REALLY explain this method; however, you can go the website for more info and/or to order the books. Here's the address: http://www.help4teachers.com If you can't get to the info that way, just type in "Layered Curriculum" in a keyword search. Hope this helps!
