    First weeks of school

The first day of school, I take my first graders on a tour of the whole school. I start with the front of the school, the offices of our secretaries, principal, vice principal and the nurse's office. Then we visit each of our special classrooms and discuss rules for behavior of each. These rooms are the gym, the computer lab, the Spanish classroom, the Music classroom, the Library and last of all the cafeteria. We spend about one hour doing this. We especially spend a little extra time in the cafeteria going over which line we go in and which table we sit at, and the rules for good manners and safety.

We spend a lot of time at the beginning of school going over school rules and classroom rules and our behavior plan in our classroom and in the school. I send home a note to all of the parents with the rules stated. There is a blank for the parents and the child to sign, stating that they have discussed these rules at home.

Sometime during the first week of school, we go up to the bus parking lot and walk around the bus and get in the bus. We go over all bus safety rules. We then make a bus safety book. The children copy one bus rule per day in their book until we finish it. This book is in the shape of a bus and has a cute yellow bus on the cover.

    Hope this helps.
