Not crazy--Smart! By Jade/3

Twenty years ago there were few openings for teachers when I got out of school, so the only thing was to sub. It was a definite baptism by fire, but it seasoned me well and later I was hired in a district because I had proven| myself as a sub. A few tips: Carry a notebook to record all of the great ideas you are going to see. Get to know the vet teachers and ask them questions about education--they will be flattered to share and may request you when next they need a sub. Keep a big calendar by your phone and a smaller one (or a palm pilot) with you--and keep them meticulously up to date. |
| You can see at a glance which days are already booked when people call, and you can write in all the info you might need: grade, school, directions. Keep an up-to-date calendar with you because lots of times secretaries will find out they need a sub while you are in their building and will ask you on the spot. You'd better know if your free. The other thing is that you'll know if you have been correctly paid by checking back on your calendar. Carry an emergency kit in case there are no or few plans: picture books to read aloud, an easy game, etc. Learn to learn names/faces quickly. It will help with discipline. Accept a wide variety of assignments--stretch yourself!Good luck and make the best of this time. You will gain a wealth of valuable experience.
