Themes great for 5th
By amy

Clip to ScrapBook
Themes are great for 5th! I have taught 6th for the past 7 years(after having taught in the primary grades), and have found that they love a theme. One of their favorites was my beach theme. I bought an inexpensive table
and chairs at our local pharmacy and put a beach umbrella in the center. This was for my reading area. Currently you could find many items at the Dollar Tree (sand buckets, leis, etc.) Another favorite was a Greek garden used during my student teacher's Mythology unit. She brought in columns, ivy, grapes, white lights, an arch, etc. for our reading area. Even the "oh so cool" guys wanted
to earn time to read in the garden. You could probably make an arch out of painted lattice and cover it with ivy and white lights. A table top fountain would be great for this as well. Perhaps your class could read Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic, The Secret Garden. Many of my students have enjoyed it in my class. Be sure to watch the film when you finish. It is great, and you could compare/contrast the two, which leads to some great discussion. Another idea a friend of mine used was "Can You Survive 5th Grade?" This was on her island bulletin board. I believe she added a bit of trivia each week to the board, and they solved the problem together. This went along with the show, Survivor. Currently I am using a Safari theme and could use some ideas as well. Let me know if you have any. I hope mine help, and have a wonderful year. Fifth grade is awesome! I believe you will enjoy the change.
