Letter Rec
By Beau

Clip to ScrapBook
I agree with the other replies to your worry. I teach pre-k and most of my kids don't actually even recognize half of the alphabet by the time they start kindergarten.
Last year I had a mother complain to the school board
that her child wasn't reading and why weren't we teaching them to read yet. These children are 4 years old, their minds are just starting to soak up everything.
But also as a mother of two children, I see where you're coming from. We always want our children to be smart, and even one step ahead of the rest, but as I've learned through experience you really can't push because it will
back-fire.
Teach one letter a week, no more than that. Each day do a different activity with something that begins with that letter. Make a big A on a poster board and help your child go through magazines finding the letter A and cutting it out a gluing it to the large letter A. Also, take index cards and draw an A on it and put them all over the house on things that start with the letter A. Review the letter at different times through the day. When you start on the letter B, do the same thing but at the end of the day review the letter A also.
The main thing right now is name recognition. Place your child's name all around the house on stickers or index cards. Teach your child to recognize his/her name with the other family member's names to see if he/she can pick it out.
Anyway, don't worry, it will all work out, especially if you send your child to PRE-K, if not... then she/he will learn it all in Kindergarten.
