Title I By Sue W.

Hi, I've been a Title I teacher for 4 years. Title I federal funds are used differently in different districts. Some districts pay aides to work in classrooms under the guidance of the classroom teacher. Others, like our| district only hire licensed elementary teachers, 8 of us for the district. Some of us have had specialized training in reading remediation, others just have teaching experience. We attend in-services and workshops together and meet to share ideas. Our district serves 1st-3rd graders in a pull-out program, half hour daily in groups of no more than 4 students. The way money is used is determined | | locally. Some districts serve students through 6th grade, in both reading and math. Our district was in a heavy push to improve literacy so they dropped math years ago. The next decision was to give help only to 1st and 2nd graders to help as many as possible, as soon as possible. Just this past year we started serving 3rd graders with the most severe problem, though we can't provide duplicate services for kids with an LD diagnosis. Not knowing how your district uses their funds its hard to say what responsibilities you would have, supervising aides? assessing students? scheduling groups for pull-out? working with teachers in their classrooms or helping them figure out remedial strategies? will you be responsible for federal reporting? You wouldn't have been asked for an interview unless they felt your experience was adequate for what they will expect of you. I am guessing a lot of the interview will be similar to a regular interview, probably they will be concerned about how you cooperate and work with other staff as well as dealing with students and their learning. I enjoy working in Title I even more than being a regular elementary classroom. Good luck!
