Scott Foresman Reading series and centers (long) By TEK

I use the Scott Foresman reading series in my 2nd grade class and I do use centers. It is very difficult to incorporate centers with this series because there is so much to cover with it and it is planned out for you day by day. I had centers twice a week...I tried to do guided reading at this time but sometimes this didn't work out. I did centers on Monday afternoons and Friday mornings. I did 2 center blocks, with 7 different centers with 3 kids at each center. I kept on a schedule with centers, this worked out better for me. The centers I used were: Listening center Writing center poetry center word | | wall read around the room abc order bingo writing a story(different from the writing center) words activity (compound, verbs, nouns, games) scrambled words word search definitions matching/memory word game making words from a large word( how many other words can you make) alphabet magnets realted worksheet to the weekly story. All the centers are somehow related to the stories we read during the week or a thematic unit for the month. It takes alot of work and organization, especially with this reading series to fit it all in. On Thursdays, I let my kids do spelling center with the spelling words from the series. Some of the centers were: rainbow spell overhead chalkboard wipe off boards letter stamps milk bottle caps with the alphabet in it letter tiles Th kids did these centers for 20 minutes instead of writing their spelling words in their spelling journal. I hope some of this information can help you. Have a fun school year!!! TEK
