Snowmen By Trudy

Last year my class made snowmen that were adorable and all the kids and parents loved them. You start with a tube sock and put a canning lid at the bottom, so that the snowman could stand up. Then put 1 Cup of rice on top| of the canning lid. This really helps the snowman stand. Next stuff the sock 1/2 way full with cotton stuffing(the stuff used to stuff pillows, I don't know the correct name for it) Then place a rubbber band around the sock right above the stuffing. This makes the bottom of the snowman. Then add stuffing above the rubber band..about half way up the remaining empty sock and put another | | rubber band around that. That part is now the head of your snowman. there are only two balls, not three on this snowman (You may want to experiment with the stuffing until you get the size of snowman you want. I haven't made these in a while, since Decemeber, and am guessing with how much stuffing you use)With the remaining part of the sock you flip or roll it over the top of the head to make the hat. If you play with it a while it can look like just like a stocking hat. I just don't know how to describe how to do it. For finishing touches we added holiday fabirc for a scarf, three buttons down the front, drew the face, and used rafia to tie around the hat with a bow where the fold of a stocking hat would be. Oh, and the fun part...I had students find sticks at recess and we cut tiny holes in the side of our snowman and added the twigs for arms. They turned out very cute. This project is a lot of fun. Try it yourself, and I think you'll find that it is easier to do than it seems. Some of my students do not celebrate Christmas, so this is a "winter" project that everyone can enjoy doing! Let me know if you need clearer instructions and I'll try to do so!! One thing I just remembered is...when stuffing the sock, remind the kids to put a lot of stuffing in it. Otherwise the snowmen tend to want to fall over.Merry Christmas in August!! lol
