I've been there!

Clip to ScrapBook
I too went from kindergarten(my first teaching job) to 5th grade. It is a huge leap, and more than a little scary, but I have been teaching 5th grade for 4 years now and can't see myself going back to younger grades.

As
far as a theme, I do keep something up all year round, but I try to make it pretty basic so I can change things out if need be. I did a jungle theme two years ago, but mainly just used fabrics and jungle colors, rather than going all out with everything. My reading corner had animal print pillows, my bulletin boards were backed in animal printed paper...etc. The kids thought the animal
prints were "cool" and seemed proud that it was their room.

As for the first day, I begin by giving the class a test. I build it up to be awful, but it ends up just being a true false quiz about me...things like how long I have been teaching, where I am from, my family and so on. This is a good way for them to get to know me in a fun format. I give a prize to the child(ren) who have the most correct. I then have each child write a short T/F quiz about themselves that they share with their group and then turn it to me later. Finally, I ask each child to bring a shoebox and a recent picture of themselves on the first day. Each child creates a time capsule out of the shoebox, that they will not open until the end of the year. On the first day of school they put their picture and a list of three goals they have for the year. Throughout the next few weeks they continue to add writing assignments, papers, drawings, and any other personal item they may want to put in. On Open House night I ask the parents to write a note for their child to put in the time capsule, and then we seal the boxes and "bury" them (I actually keep them in the teacher's storage room, but you get the idea). A few days before the end of school we have a time capsule opening ceremony and the kids are amazed at how much they have changed!

Well, this was a long-winded answer to your question, but I hope it helped. Good Luck!
