No need to
By Stephanie

Becca I am in your same exact situation. I was following the associates degree plan for business administration. They said that i need to take 68 hours to get an associates degree in business administration. The problem is
that my 4 year college will only accept 64. So, I got a department head to evaluate my classes that I have already taken and had her to suggest some classes I need to take. Well, I found out that I did not need to take literature I, literature II, and micro applications II. So I was releived. I would have just been taking classes that I did not need and putting myself further behind. So
now I am just going to take the classes that I need to transfer. I was looking forward to getting my associates degree, but hey I can save that money you have to pay to graduate.

I was just sitting up there taking their core classes when i should have been taking the core classes for my major at the four year college.

Then no one told me that you could just take the core classes and take anything to make up 64 hours to graduate. I thought that you had to take certain classes.

Then no one told me that it doesn't really matter what you major in at a community college because you will get just an associates of art degree either way it goes.

They say that you won't lose your credits when you transfer at the community college if you take over 64 there. But they don't tell you that those extra credits won't be applied. No they do not lie, but they do not tell the whole truth either. They don't tell you that you won't be getting ahead, but you will be taking classes for nothing.

Just think of a community college as a way to become an entering junior debt free or almost debt free compared to a four year college.

So my advice to you Becca, just take anywhere from 60-64 credits and leave as fast as you can. Don't get your associates degree, because it is not worth the time or the effort sometimes. But I guess it all depends on your major too. If you can find a program that will allow you to take only 64 hours and meet the classes you need when you transfer, then do it. If not, don't waste your time. It may be too late anyway. So don't waste your time saying I wish I would have did this and that, and just move forward. Anyway, it is not like you can get a job just with your associates degree. The jobs that are available to people who have associates degree, there hours are during the hours you are trying to go to school. So it does not matter. An associates degree does not make you more marketable than a person who took 2 years at a 4 year college. You are viewed in the same manner. The only way that an Associates degree makes a difference if you receive an Associates in science degree(nursing program) or a technical program. You know. So don't worry about it. Just follow my advice and you will be okay.
