poetry
By Jeanne

Clip to ScrapBook
I always start the year with a poetry unit. I do many of the things already mentioned. One thing I started this past year that was a great success was a weekly poetry slam. The students signed up to read poems to the class.
They could read either their own poems or poems by others. We had a stool in the front of the class, dimmed the lights and had a spot light (very coffee house). We even snapped our fingers to show our appreciation. We also had guest readers (the principal, counselor, nurse, parents, even my husband and college age daughter came in to read). The students loved it. Each week over
half the class would sign up. Throughout the year every student participated (it was voluntary). I was only going to do this during our unit but the class insisted that we do it the whole year. I will definately be doing this agian.
