I use props all the time in my classroom! I teach fifth grade, too, and my kids love them. I'm not sure if you are familiar with Quantum Learning (they are the ones that do the SuperCamp thing in the summer), but I've taken their training and using props is one of the things they encourage. I have hats that indicate certain things---for example, I have a tiara I wear when I have an important announcement, a baseball cap when we do drills (math, spelling, etc)...I also have bought those silly hats shaped like a birthday hat that kids wear on their day, etc. Other things I've used...an oversized magnifying | | glass when we have to take a deeper look at something, those big eye-glasses to look at things in a new way. Next year I am doing my entire classroom in a racing theme and I am currently collecting racing props. Not sure what I am going to do with them, but I have them!
