Is the glass half-empty or half-full?
By Beth

Clip to ScrapBook
While I can certainly relate to the overwheling feelings that a new year can bring, I tend to view the summer in a different light. I use this time to think back over the year (this includes the good, the bad, AND the ugly)
and decide what worked and what didn't. Then I decide what I need to fix and how I am going to fix it.
For example, I hate teaching writing. Unfortunately, I am moving from third grade to fourth grade next year where there is a state mandated writing test. So I am reading professional literature on the subject and surfing the web in search of help. The beauty of using my summer
"free time" to do this is that I can pick it up whenever I feel like it and drop it whenever I get sick of it.
I also use some time over the summer to do as much "prep work" for the upcoming year as possible. For example, I sketch my room layout (I like to change it yearly), I buy any materials I think I need (ex. nameplates), I create blank spreadsheets for the upcoming year, etc. That way when that dreaded first teacher workday comes I don't feel overwhelmed with all I have to accomplish which would lead me to be verrry cranky and would start my year on a sour note.
I know that this reply goes against the grain of the thread, but I wanted to put my two cents in!
