Homework
By Anonymous

Clip to ScrapBook
Someone once said to me you need to ask yourself what homework is for. If homework is so that students can practice to meet standards, then you need to ask yourself this question: "Do you want to manage a homework system
or a learning system?"

The poster who said that she believes students who do homework make better grades on tests and quizzes, try this: Do a scattergram showing the relationship btw. turning in homework and grades on quizzes. If both variables go up, then show the students this. They might be amazed and start seeing the connection. If the variables go down or are all over the place,

then there is either no coorelation or a negative one. In which case, you need to look at the type of homework you give. Either way, you win--by having students see the relation or by having yourself see that homework ISN'T helping.

It is interesting to note also that research shows homework has little relation to acheivement until you get to middle school. Unfortunately, we must give it in some districts and parents believe it to be par for the course.

Just some thoughts for you.
