Re: Clarifying and asking questions
By Beth

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi! I just finished my second year of teaching 3rd grade. I have been using recipricol teaching and have been using the reading strategies you have mentioned above. While middle school and elementary have their share of
differences I imagine the reading strategies remain the same.
I teach my students that "clarifying" is used when you do not understand something. For example if they come to a word they do not understand or a long sentence that may be confusing, they must clarify to gain understanding. I teach my students that they have several options when clarifying. They may 1. Go
back and rearead what they have read.
2. They may read on to look for clues
3. They may have to look back to another section
of the text
4. They may have to use a dictionary or other
resource
When I teach my students about "asking questions" I explain that this is when you want to know more information about a section of text that was not answered in that section of text. When students ask questions they may be answered later in the text or not. If we have a list of quesitons that have not been answered I discuss with students where they may go to find the answer or using what they know about the text what conclusion can they draw in regard to their question.
I hope this helps!
