Our school district just started implementing the 4 block model last year. At the beginning I was confused because I had always been taught that guided reading was small group instruction, never whole and that groupings were based on needs. Anyways, to get it straight in my head..this is how I break it down. Guided Reading 4 blocks way is whole group instruction on Reading Strategies. Strategy Instruction. So you teach the whole group different strategies. These are mini lessons. Then, I also use small groups for need based instruction. This is where you would do your ability groupings. If you are going to implement 4 blocks then I suggest you get your grade level materials of..Month by Month Phonics, Make Words to go with the Month by Month Phonics, Word Wall Second grade and Guess the covered word. This will get you on a good start for four blocks word block. The beach balls are great and so are the comprehension cubes. To get a handle on teaching strategies, there are 3 books I highly recommend. Mosaic of Thought, Strategies that Work, and Reading with Meaning. All great resources.
