In the first half of the year (first grade) we use decodables. These are books which strictly teach decoding skills. In addition, we use big books and read alouds to teach comprehension, etc. These are real literature. The second semester, the kids read from the anthologies. These books are comprised of real litereature, non-fiction, and poetry. They are not the Reader's Digest version. The Itsy, Bitsy Spider, Frog and Toad, and A House is A House for Me are three titles I can tell you off the top of my head.
