I think it's perfectly reasonable to have a giving tree. You are a new teacher who hasn't received a paycheck! I think that you will find that some, if not most, of your parents would love to make donations of needed items. (Okay, I hope you will find that true.) =)
But I have a question. When I first started teaching I received $150 also, to purchase things I would need to begin the year. BUT, was still able to request supplies from the supply closet throughout the year for items such as construction paper, sharpies, tape, paint, tissue paper, etc. Is it not going to be that way in your school?
