centers By Susan

Depending on how your school is set up, I've found that centers work best on "gifted" days. The reason I do that is because I have fewer kids that day (I had 7 gifted last year) and they need that extra tutoring time. I teach 5th grade, but I would do it the same with 3rd. The way I work it is like this: 30 minutes each - groups of 3-4 6 centers with enrichment activities to reinforce what we've done all week (reading center with books from social studies, science center with a lab, spelling words to stamp out, computers with software or a research project or webquest, and games that are educational | | - Scrabble, Millionaire, Chess...). In addition, one of the centers is a tutoring center with me - I go over any areas they're having trouble, and help them with it. They absolutely loved the center day!!! My gifted kids felt left-out sometimes, but when I reminded them that they had a special day with projects (and centers), they realized it was very similar. I just couldn't do the centers with 27 students!
