Long ago is my favorite thing to teach. I begin by reading Little House in the Big Woods usually in Oct. (I do skip over many things in the book as it becomes so drawn out with descriptions.) We discuss how people lived. We make johnny cakes, weave yarn, build a log cabin (out of pretzel rods), taste real maple syrup, have dried beef (beef jerkey), and make candles. The kids work on that papers that show different jobs people had back then- barrel maker, candle maker, black smith ect.. There is also one about the horn board, what kids learned in their one-room classroom. You can just go on and on. Put as much as you want into it. I finish it up around Thanksgiving. It falls into place really nice then. hope this gives you some ideas.
