I always use Cynthia Rylant books at the beginning of the year. The Relatives Came- I read aloud, make connections to my memories, let students share their memories, then I let them go write about their favorite memory to help me see where they are phonemically, in writing skills, and language skills. I don't tell them this! I save this piece and they get to compare it later in the year to their writing to show progress.
