Getting a job
By Lori

Clip to ScrapBook
I'm curious, what have you been doing for the past 5 years? Have you been subbing, or working as an instructional aid, or in a school system in any other capacity? My principal and I hired a new 5th grade teacher today.
There were 321 applicants for this one position. We interviewed 10. You have to make yourself stand out from the rest. It is very true that it isn't what you know, it's who you know. Every candidate we interviewed today was there because of who he or she knew. We did not look at any GPA's, it really boiled down to experience. To begin, your experience may have to come from subbing
or working as an in-school tutor or instructional aid of some sort. This may lead you to a long term subbing position. All of these things will connect you with people who may be able to put in the good word needed to get you an interview. One other thing, have you considered a parochial or charter school? The pay isn't as good but it's a start!
