getting a job in education
By Maryanne

Clip to ScrapBook
It could be one, all, or none of your reasons. Getting a teaching position is very much a matter of luck, being in the right place at the right time. Like you, I tried for 6 years to land a full time teaching position.
I put in my time as a sub and an aide, only to be passed by. My GPA wan't the best (3.1) in my major classes. I thought that had everything to do with it until I noticed just who was being hired. Sad to say, you have to know someone to land that interview. So, I asked my previous employers to write recommendation letters for me. They were able to say glowing things on paper but not
hire me--go figure. I waited until August and "pounded the pavement". I went door to door and asked to see the principals of various schools. I then followed up with phone calls. I checked the internet for job openings and called as soon as I found them (don't bother waiting for them to call you). Then I checked the district web page so I would be knowlegeable about their system. I guess I was pushy, but it let them know I was interested. (Or maybe they granted the interview to get me off their back) Anyhow, I have been employed for 2 years teaching 3rd grade. It was worth it. Hope this helps.
