Congratulations! You must be excited to start.
Just a few wandering thoughts from an experienced teacher...
1. Know your curriculum. Parents and students may ask about the topics you will be studying.
2. Have a
packet, letter, handout, whatever you want to call it on their desks. Have info in it about you. Really emphasize all the positive things you have done. Tell about your goals for the year, your discipline plan. Add a volunteer sheet if you want classroom help. This will allow you time to visit individually with students and parents.
3. I like the idea of handing them a scavenger
hunt type of thing. That way you can visit, they can pick up their desk packet, and yet the scavenger hunt can be handed to them when you have had enough of one parent or student and the scavenger hunt will send them on their way...hopefully out of the room.
4. Of course, I am sure you will have your room ready. Decorated, etc. This will leave them with the impression you know what you are doing. ( Acting as if....just kidding!!!)
5. RELAX! SMILE! BE FRIENDLY! Most parents just want to know you a little so they feel a bit more comfortable sending Johnny off to school.
6. Try to listen more than you talk. You can learn a lot about kids/parents by observing and watching. It will help later.

Hope this helps....
