My Plan
By V

Clip to ScrapBook
I have a system that works well for me without the kids ever saying anything. First of all, we have a "Stix Cup" where are pencils that are found or too small are put. If a student loses one, they look there. If a student
doesn't have one, they look there. At the beginning of the year, if a student didn't have a pencil, they'd raise their hand and tell me. I believe in tough love. I say "And how is that my problem? I brought MY things to school. I won't supply pencils. I'm not Wal-mart." They laugh at that, but they don't ask again when they get the same reply. I tell them to borrow or check the stix cup.
For pencil sharpening, I don't have a problem. Kids like to sharpen pencils, so they'll ask a lot if you let them. I have a system. Two fingers in the air if you need to sharpen. My kids would keep their 2 fingers up until I acknowledge it with a nod which means okay or a shake which means now is not good. My principal saw this and saw how the kids did it and how successful it was. She loved it. Hope this helps. It worked for me and I didn't buy pencils.Oh, and kids love to "donate" pencils to the stix cup because the teacher liked it.
