Worker Comp. insurance/job duties
By Ken

Clip to ScrapBook
Wyatt,

If the school gives you a paycheck (payroll with federal, state and FICA taxes deducted versus a lump sum payment) then you are covered by their worker compensation insurance, same as any other employee. Worker compensation
insurance is NOT deducted from the paychecks; it is paid by the employer.

Secondly I fail to see anything wrong with you being asked to help box up "stuff", even if that stuff is not yours. You took a call to substitute for a teacher. While it may have been more difficult for you to box this material up it does not sound to me like it was an unreasonable task for you, a substitute,

to do.

I also do not feel you are entitled to the planning period unless you're doing this as a long-term and have many of the same tasks as the regular teacher. You may get the planning period, fine. But I feel the school has the right to ask you to work through it as long as you get a reasonable lunch break and break(s) for using the restroom, etc.

Please check with the school's administrator/business manager if you are in doubt about coverage on worker compensation coverage.
