Success for All... By LindaR

I taught at an SFA school...I did not like the program overall for the upper grades, but I did like the different components of the program. When I taught at a different school the following year, which was not an SFA school,| I was able to use the components of SFA that I felt would work with my class. I don't mind scripted programs, but I felt SFA was too binding and did not allow any room for flexibility; thus the kids seem to have scripted answers, rather than true comprehension of what they were reading. There are some advantages, such as not having to deal with lesson plans for LA, but I'd rather | | choose the direction I felt my students needed to go. The constant testing and record keeping can also be overwhelming...ouch, now I'm thinking of the many hours I spent creating all the meaningful sentences...You might want to check the school's progress in the reading area to see if/how SFA is working for them. You can either ask in the interview or you check at http://www.greatschools.net/ to see how they're doing... One last thing, the SFA facilitator can seem more like the Warden than a support, so be sure to ask about his/her role in the program
