6th Gr.. Adventurous
By Coach / Teacher

Clip to ScrapBook
(Sorry for being lengthy)and are a great group of individuals. They can be funny, curious, serious, emotional, and successful. They come in anxious, motivated, and wanting to please. AND curious to see who the teacher is
and how their adventure will begin. This year I am anxious to use Dr. Marvin Marshall's approach to student behavior. Another teacher (Linda R) has commented on previous proteacher posts on Marshall (with dynamic results). Some other activities that have helped me jumpstart a positive year are:

At the beginning of the year, we take our first trip to the computer lab where my students

fill out a job application(word template) that I designed. General info questions are asked and the other questions (that I really like) are asking the students to write short response answers describing their habits, attitudes, family life, likes/dislikes, favorite foods, what they like about themselves, why they should be promoted to the next grade job, and how they plan to prepare for the next grade job. Each student takes the other's digital picture to be printed out and placed on their job app (this is used for student led conferences).

I like to use classroom decorations that are progressive, current, and engaging. Students are delegated to update our sports themes board; bat labeled "Figure It Out" (where students respond to a question or solve a problem, etc. basketball labeled "But..Can You Do This?" (where students are challenged to do some activity on the playground during recess including: basketball, jumping rope, pick up the most litter in 2 minutes,or etc.; a brain labeled "Who Am I Helping Today?" (where students choose to do a good deed for someone); "News With A Twist" board where students take turns cutting out daily news articles and will write an answer for the other students to guess what news article it came from.

I continue to learn so much from 6th grade students. My students understand real quick that opportunities deserve attention and committment. Lastly, more ideas...try google and type in 6th Grade Classroom Ideas. The results are bountiful. You will be great at 6th since teaching 5th grade. Best to you and your students.
