have her eyes been checked lately?

boy it sounds like a lot is going on with this child....I'd really like to have an OT check her out for figure ground difficulties....and I wonder about her receptive and expressive language....maybe having a speech evaluation
done also....now I know that won't help you at all this summer with tutoring but I'm thinking long run...I am bothered by not being able to repeat the words or phone number back in the order given. Have you tried segmenting words to see if she can do this? What I mean is say sailboat...say it again but don't say boat. Say bed say it again but change the b to t...see if she can do
that...if not that reinforces my receptive and expressive language disability theory.

I did some research on the colored overlays...and found that they have mixed results...so you can try but they may not have the results you desire...I have no idea where you'd buy them....maybe call an office supply store and see if they have colored overheads you could try?

Have you had her spell the sounds the letters make? by this I mean give her a spelling test with only the sounds....spell the sound of b so you'd say the b sound and she'd write what letter she thinks it is....I'd do that with all the consonants ( including qu, sh, ch, wh, th) and long and short vowel sounds....I'd see if she can spell the different ways to make the K sound, c, k, ck, ke
I'd have her write the alphabet....and time how long it takes her to do it....then look at her mistakes and analyze what she can and can't do.
It's interesting that she can take the word apart but can't make it whole....likewise with the sentences....what happens when you put the words in a sentence but write the words down the board like a column instead of sentence form?

What about her numeration? Can she write her numbers to 100? Can she skip count? Is she reversing her numbers as well? Can she write her phone number and just not say it? Can she see patterns in numbers?

Has this child been referred for special ed services? It could be a maturity issue but there are some quirky things going on here....what does mom say/think?

I'm sorry I haven't given you anything concrete to tutor her on...my mind went to the disabilities aspect of where she is and what she sees...I'd ask mom about the eye exam...and if she hasn't been have her tell the doctor that she is having difficulties with reading....
