This entire strand is very enlightening. I have seen combinations of both suggestions given. We have an electronic gradebook system at our school that weights different assignments. I have seen teachers place smaller values on homework for different reasons. One important reasons is that some children have difficulty receiving help with homework at home. The support, encouragement or even discipline to sit down and do the assignment is not there. This is not an excuse for them not to complete the assignment, because responsibility is something that we as educators have to teach children. Homework should be worthy and not busywork or just for the sake of homework. It should not consume hours of at-home time. I have seen free time or recess taken away to complete assignments with the assistance of an volunteer or aide. I have also given table points for an entire table returning an assignment. The whole table (4 -6 students) returns a homework assignment. They earn a letter in the word HOMEWORK. Once that table has spelled homework they all earn a homework coupon for no homework one time. I have seen slacking students use before school free time to sit at their desk and do a math assignment that they did not do at home for two reason. #1 their table partners won't be upset with them for not bringing their homework to class #2 they also get a homework coupon at the end of the HOMEWORK chart. Good luck with your homework policy.
