I'd start looking!

I agree, stating your intention to return was how you were feeling at the time, and a security issue, most of us need an income! You have not officially signed a contract, and even people who have, are usually released if
they ask to be. You are not as happy as you could be in your present position.
LOOK! Check out posibilities. There are still positions available, but many are already filled, so don't waste time. You are not doing anything wrong. The sooner you let your school know, the sooner they can replace you, but expecting you will get another job and quitting before you have a position can lead

to an unplanned year off!

As far as the conference goes, I don't know what to do there. You could just let them know you won't be able to go, if someone else could do it. Or go and then if you have a new position before the next school year, offer to report back to your current staff about the conference, taking a personal leave from a new job to do so, if possible.

You have formed relationships in your present job, and some may be disappointed that you do not return. Anyone who really cares though, will be happy for you, finding a position that is better for you personally. It is work for them to find a replacement, but having you remain there, unhappy, is not as good for the school as having someone else who may be very comfortable there.
