I teach in a public school. We all get the "Will you be coming back letter". This is not a contract, just a letter of intent. Everyone checks "yes" (except those retiring or already have another job). If you find another job, just let them know ASAP. IN my opinion it is acceptable to take a new job anytime except days before school or during the school year (unless it is for the following year).
