I, too, am addicted to childrens literature. One that I absolutely love is Our Only May Amelia by Jennifer L. Holm. The setting is the Nasel River Valley in Washington state in the early 1900's. The story is based upon the author's great-aunt. May Amelia is the only girl in a family of 8 children. At the opening of the story she makes a birthday wish that the baby that her mother is expecting would be a girl so that she would no longer be the only girl in their logging community. When I first read this story to my students I was pregnant with my son and sections of the story would bring to me tears!!! (Hormones of pregnancy will do that to you! Ha!) I absolutely LOVE this story!
