Go get the book The First Days of School by Harry Wong. It is a step-by-step guide for setting up an effective classroom. It is written like an "owner manual". You will be able to turn to the right section(s) to address your needs. Topics addressed include the characteristics of an effective teacher, forming positive expectations for your students, classroom management, designing effective lesson plans, etc. I've been teaching for 17 years and each summer I still sit down and browse through this book to gear-up for the upcoming year.
