Ocean Theme
By BuzyBee

Clip to ScrapBook
I did this theme this past year with my fourth graders. I LOVED it! It was a lot of fun and they loved it too. Here are some things I did...

Reading Corner: "Reader's Reef" and I put a sign that said "Sink your teeth
into a good book!" with a shark. I put up fish and coral pictures to make it feel like an underwater retreat.

Reward Coupons: Dolphin Dollars; students earned them for variou rewards

Jobs: "Hatching Classroom Helpers!" I put the kids names on sea turtles and the jobs on eggs and rotated them around the sandy background.

Behavior Management: I had an area called Behavior Beach

where each student had a set of colored cards.

Decorations for Ceiling: Check out your local party supply or craft store. I found some great cardboard fish and sea animals to hang and post on the walls.

Other Decorations: I found a lot of "junk" at a local carnival supply store. Big plastic lobsters, fish, and fish nets all are nice to hang around bulletin boards and over doorways.

Grass Table Skirt: I used this to create extra storage at a table against a wall. I put my science kits underneath out of view. The grass skirt gave it a beach-like feel.

Bulletin Boards: Check out the fabric department at Wal-Mart. They have AWESOME beach/fish material. I used it and left it up all year. It never fades!

Good Work Board: "Work to Treasure" I made a big background map out of brown packaging paper and sketched a treasure map on it. I used gold coins leftover from a mardi gras celebration to glue to push-pins to hold up work.

Hall Pass: I bought a big plastic fish from the dollar store and wrote our class name on it. It really held up well.

Nametags: Each student's name was on a dolphin. I used Print Shop to make and print on tag board.

If you go to www.beeyourbest.com you can see pics of my class. It is under my 2002/2003 class. I loved the theme. Good luck with it! With Nemo, your 1st graders are sure to love it.
