I'm sorry because it sounds like you are in a really tough situation without much administrative support. It certainly does not show very good judgment for the principal to tell you people are "talking"/unhappy about next year.I personally can't imagine anyone else (particularly a sub I didn't have much confidence in) doing my report cards.
