it doesn't sound like (from what you've shared) that you are being gossiped about--sounds like these people just miss you and are wondering what you are up to.

perhaps there is more that i'm not getting--if this is the case, single out one or two people you can really trust and ask them, "Hey, i'm getting the impression that stories are being told about me. Is this true?" although, even if it's true, there is really nothing you can do to stop them--or even to "get back at" the original story starter. you can hold your head high and continue to do a good job--people should judge you for that.
