I think volunteer work is very important and the best thing about volunteer work, you can decide what you are going to do and when you are going to do it...not exactly how an actual job works!

When I was finishing up school,
I volunteered at a local elementary school in all the grades to get a "taste" of what they were like, then once I had decided what grades were a fit for me, I started to volunteer more intensely in those grades.
Volunteering is also a great way to get a feel for teaching (from the teacher standpoint, rather than the student one) and a source of excellent advice and ideas. I asked

one of the teachers I volunteered for to read over my application to "teachers college" to see what she thought of how I answered the teaching scenario questions and she also wrote me a letter of recommendation.

Good luck with school and do not feel bad that your parents are helping you with your education...you are very fortunate and sound like you know it so enjoy your time in school...
