I use the contact paper type stuff. I bought it myself and it does take time, but it's worth it. Just make sure you cut the piece large enough so you can wrap it around the front and back cover ends---less likely to peel off.

I also use the zip lock bags. All my books are able to be checked out, but must be in a bag. It really helps the edges from being folded down and keeps the books cleaner as they travel in the dreaded book bags.
