I've occasionally been on the receiving end of praise like this and it makes the one who is being praised feel uncomfortable as well. A short "I really appreciate what you've done this year" might be appropriate in front of others. Anything more than that should be done privately or in a letter. (Which I prefer because you can save it to reread when you're feeling down!)
