Career change from RN to Teacher By Debbie
I have a BSN/RN degree and practiced full time for 6 years, and part time for 2-3 years after starting a family. Now that my children are approaching their teen years I still want to be home when they are home, but I would like to return to work. Trying to find a way to work in nursing and have a family is just not working for me. The long hours and physically and emotionally draining work of nursing was tolerable when I was single, but not now. I recently taught an afterschool course on cooking science/nutrition. I came home from each class physically spent but mentally and emotionally recharged. Each |
| week I enthusiastically researched my material and looked forward to each class. I found something I never felt with nursing. I also worked as a substitute school nurse and a substitute teacher. The days I came home from teaching,I felt tired but excited and wanted more. The days I came home from school nursing, quite frankly I did not see the point. My plan is to pursue an assistant teacher position in early childhood education for one or more years, and then decide if I want to teach as a career. It is extremely difficult to leave such a noble profession such as nursing, where you learn to read people and react instinctively. I can only hope my nursing experience will act as a benefit in my next career.
