teacher, I'm done

I gave each student a blue composition book and they write in them like journals. I found a website that had tons of writing prompts asking questions about them. I place them in a jar and the student goes up chooses a question, writes it down with the date and writes about it. At the end of the year it goes home to the parent's. Hopefully they will keep it and read it years from now. Its almost like their own private diary. They can draw pictures to illustrate, tape things inside, etc. They love it and are becoming better writers without even knowing it. Good luck.
